A routine passport verification by the Ahmedabad Special Operations Group (SOG) has uncovered an alleged identity fraud involving a man from Ayodhya who changed his name and personal details after marrying a Muslim woman. The investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly created multiple government identity documents under a new name and used them to apply for a passport with the intention of travelling abroad.
The case came to light after the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner’s Office assigned the passport verification to SOG Police Inspector C.B. Chauhan. During scrutiny of the applicant’s records, investigators noticed significant discrepancies between his previous and newly submitted identity documents, leading to a detailed investigation.
According to the SOG, the applicant was originally identified as Yogendrakumar Maurya, a resident of Ayodhya. His earlier passport carried the name Yogendrakumar Maurya, with his father’s name listed as Ramkumar Maurya and his mother’s name as Amravati.
However, in the fresh passport application, the applicant identified himself as Abdul Rehman Abdul Karim Khan. The application also listed completely different parental details, naming his father as Abdul Karim Khan and his mother as Anisha, raising suspicion during the verification process.
Love Marriage Led to Identity Change
During questioning, Yogendrakumar told investigators that he lived with his family near Ayodhya and frequently travelled outside his hometown in search of work. During this period, he developed a relationship with Khushnumabanu, who lived in the neighbouring area.
As the couple belonged to different religions and their families did not approve of their marriage, they reportedly left their homes and moved to Delhi.
Police said the couple first got married according to Hindu rituals at an Arya Samaj institution. Later, in order to solemnise their marriage through Islamic customs and perform a nikah, Yogendrakumar changed his name to Abdul Rehman Abdul Karim Khan, following which a nikahnama was prepared in the new identity.
Family Shifted to Ahmedabad
After their marriage, the couple moved to Ahmedabad and started living in the Janata Row House area of Danilimda. Police investigation has revealed that they currently have three children.
Further investigation, however, found that the identity of Abdul Rehman Abdul Karim Khan was entirely fictitious. According to the police, the accused approached a broker operating near Jamalpur Bridge and allegedly paid money to obtain fresh identity documents in the new name.
Using the newly created identity, he allegedly procured an Aadhaar card, PAN card and Election Identity Card before submitting an application for a passport. Investigators believe he intended to travel abroad after obtaining the passport.
Passport Verification Exposed the Fraud
The alleged fraud was detected during the mandatory passport verification process when officials compared the applicant’s old records with the newly submitted documents. The differences in name, parental details and identity records prompted a detailed inquiry, eventually exposing the alleged fabrication of identity.
Following the investigation, the Ahmedabad SOG has registered a criminal case against Yogendrakumar Maurya. Police have also widened the probe to trace the broker who allegedly helped prepare the forged documents and to identify others connected to the suspected fake document network.
