Almost 10 days after human body parts were recovered from a municipal drinking water treatment plant, AMC officials said that the remains slipped through a damaged interceptor mesh.
The Kotarpur water treatment plant, which serves the eastern parts of the city, had to drain millions of litres of water stocked for processing after the decomposed human remains were found. A team of the city police has registered a case of “accidental death” and has sent the remains for forensic examination.
The Kotarpur plant is the only water treatment plant where raw water from the Narmada main canal directly flows into the processing unit. “sually, if animals fall into the canal or people commit suicide in the Narmada main canal, the remains flow towards the plant but are trapped at a well-graded mesh. The mesh was damaged some days ago, and as a result the body parts entered the processing unit.
Once the raw Narmada water reaches the Kotarpur plant, the stock undergoes preliminary filtration after which the processed stock is supplied to Jaspur and Raska water treatment plants for further filtration and disinfection before it is pumped into the municipal water supply lines.
