British-Indian Kills Mother, Attempts Cover-Up, Gets Life Imprisonment

| Updated: December 17, 2024 17:32

A 48-year-old man of Indian origin has been convicted of murdering his 76-year-old mother at their family home in Leicester, UK.

Sandeep Singh fatally attacked his mother following a row over the family property, which he believed had been bequeathed to him by his late father.

On December 16, Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment and must serve a minimum of 31 years before being eligible for parole.

Singh had planned to bury his mother’s body in the yard, according to Leicestershire Police. Singh’s attempt to get rid of the body was evident from the fact that the residence had been cleaned and smelt strongly of disinfectant.

Singh’s mother, Bhajan Kaur, had previously reported him for his conduct. While those investigations were being conducted, he was freed on bail after being detained on suspicion of engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour.

The murder of Singh’s mother turned up on the evening of May 13 when family members who were unable to get in touch with Kaur came to the residence and discovered her body.

Kaur had suffered significant facial and head injuries. According to Leicestershire Police, when police responded to a 999 call, they found a sizable hole dug in the backyard, which may indicate that the body had been attempted to be buried.

Singh was taken into custody by police close to the location shortly after. He first gave incorrect information and claimed to be someone else, but his identity was later verified by additional checks.

Singh also stated that when he was taken into custody on suspicion of murder, he was unaware of the incident.

Subsequent investigation showed that earlier that day, Kaur had let Singh, who had been residing in his car on the driveway, to enter the house.

Later, he was seen on CCTV leaving the house to buy a sack barrow and spade from a local store.

After returning home, he tried to get rid of the evidence, but Leicestershire police say that when family members came and discovered the body, he was arrested.

The case was sent to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because of prior interactions between Singh, Kaur and the police. Two officers received individual learning as an outcome of an independent inquiry by the IOPC, Leicestershire Police said.
