Budget Sliced, Not Mangoes: Wholesale Markets Witness A Five-Year High

| Updated: June 13, 2022 15:07

Mango prices are witnessing a five-year high in the wholesale market due to the upsurge in input costs and insufficiency of mangoes across the country. The Saurashtra region, in particular, is facing a shortage of mangoes, the favorite summer fruit of India. Even Ahmedabad gobbled 50 truckloads, each truck with ten tons of mangoes a day. However, the city has been getting only 30 truckloads of all-quality mangoes.

Wholesale market prices range from ₹50 to ₹100 per kilogram. Moreover, wholesale dealers at the Naroda fruit market complained that the output and input costs are the same for farmers. The farm owners give a contract for ₹70 per kilogram. After adding the transportation and packing charges, the cost increases. The decrease in supply from Una and Talala is an additional factor in the price increase.

According to the sources, the wholesale and the retail prices are higher than usual. In 2022, mangoes will cost a fortune for many people. For Kesar, the most loved variation, the rates range from ₹45-90 per kilogram. However, in May, the cyclone uprooted several trees. Hence, the production was lower in 2022 compared to previous years.

The retail cost of Kesar is ₹150-170 per kilogram based on the region. On the other hand, Badami costs ₹70-90 per kilogram in retail. However, fruit traders expect that the arrival of Kutchi Kesar will reduce the prices to some extent. But, there is not much hope for a change in the retail prices.

Ahmedabad also expects mangoes from Uttar Pradesh. Thus, some variations will be available in the last phase of the mango season.
