Centre Acknowledges Security Lapses In Pahalgam Attack: Claims Report

| Updated: April 25, 2025 14:42

In a candid admission, the central government has acknowledged security lapses in the recent Pahalgam terror attack during an all-party meeting.

A media house has reported that a senior leader from the ruling party admitted that if everything had been functioning properly, such a meeting wouldn’t have been necessary. The leader said there were undeniable failures that needed to be identified and addressed.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, represented the government in the meeting.

The government had called the closed-door session in an attempt to placate rising criticism and present its version of events. However, the Opposition did not hold back. According to insiders, multiple opposition leaders sharply questioned the government’s preparedness and the glaring absence of security forces, pointedly demanding to know where the Central Reserve Police Force and other security personnel were during the attack.

The central government has claimed that local authorities had failed to intimate security agencies before opening the Baisaran area near Pahalgam in Anantnag district—a zone that is customarily kept off-limits until the commencement of the Amarnath Yatra in June.

This move has now emerged as a critical security breach, potentially exposing scores of civilians to danger in a high-risk zone without adequate protection.

Equally troubling were revelations about the government’s sluggish response to the carnage. According to the report, officials attempted to justify the delay by stating the attack site was located a grueling 45-minute uphill trek away, and, shockingly, no standard operating procedure (SOP) existed to deal with such emergencies. The absence of a clear protocol underscores a disturbing lack of preparedness in a region long known for its vulnerability to terror strikes.

Kiren Rijiju said all parties — and this includes Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi — are united in India’s fight against terrorism. He said, “All parties said that they are with the government in this fight against terrorism. All political parties have given this message and the leaders of all parties have said in one voice that whatever step the government takes, we will support it.”
