The Congress on Monday demanded resignation of Bachu Khabad, minister of state for panchayat and agriculture, whose two sons are allegedly involved in multi-crore Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Dahod.
No sooner did the seventh session of the 15th assembly begin, the Congress MLAs staged a walkout demanding Khabad’s resignation. They then stood outside the state assembly carrying placards.
The three-day monsoon session of the state assembly is likely to be stormy. It is the first session for Aam Aadmi Party MLA Gopal Italia, who won by-election from Visavadar. AAP MLA from Dediapada Chaitar Vasava, who is behind the bars in connection with alleged charges of murder, has got conditional bail to attend the session.
Demanding the resignation of Khabad, Congress MLA Tushar Chaudhary said it is a statewide scam and if a proper investigation is done then big names will emerge.
Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani demanded a CBI inquiry and said that involvement of officers will also come to light.
Khabad’s sons Balwant and Kiran were arrested a few months ago after their names emerged in the scam. They were later released on bail. Their companies were given contracts despite not emerging the lowest bidders.
The modus operandi showed that works were carried out on pieces of land owned by Khabad and his family members.
The issue was also raised by Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat Shaktisinh Gohil. At that time the Union Government in its reply had acknowledged the scam and said that a committee has been formed to look into the matter.
Five important bills pertaining to industry, finance, labour and healthcare are expected to be presented in the three-day session.
Condolence motions are to be presented on the first day, including that for former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who died in Air India AI 171 plane crash.
