Local MLAs in the Gujarat Pradesh Congress protested at the Gujarat Pradesh Congress headquarters, demanding that Thakor Samaj be given seats in the Viramgam assembly. The BJP gave a ticket to Hardik Patel from Viramgam, while Lakha Bharwad is currently the Congress MLA. 63-year-old Lakha Bharwad defeated BJP candidate Tejshree Patel by 6,500 votes in 2017. Whereas in 2012, she won by 16,983 votes on the Congress symbol.
From Viramgam, the BJP has fielded Hardik Patel, a leader of the Patidar movement. Thakors, Patels, and Rabari-Bharwads are the major societies in Viramgam.
On Friday, a large delegation of the Thakor community came to the state Congress headquarters and aggressively opposed the present Congress MLA, saying that “only the Thakor society can compete with Hardik Patel; even as a voter, the number of the Thakor community is 80–85 thousand.” So a ticket should be given to Thakor. If the party expresses its confidence in Lakha Bharwad, then Congress will have to face defeat.
