Adventure water sport enthusiasts might be happy to know that Dharoi Dam might be a new venue for the Ironman Triathlon competition. Tourism officials are mulling over the idea proposed by the Ironman Triathlon Organisers. Dharoi Dam has all the facilities required for hosting an Ironman competition.
Widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world, the Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride, and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run completed in that order, for a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km).
This year, on October 27, 2024, Goa is hosting the fourth edition of India’s Ironman. If all goes well, it is highly likely that by the beginning of 2025, Dharoi Dam can be host to international events such as Ironman.
The Gujarat government has ambitious plans to develop various sites apart from traditionally popular tourist destinations. Dharoi dam area in North Gujarat, between Taranga and Ambaji, is one such spot, which has attracted a higher place in the list of priorities of state tourism officials.
The state has earmarked the destination as an adventure sports destination for some time now. The entire project, worth Rs. 935 crore, has been allotted after the due tendering process. The project included road development, utility infrastructure, and water and sewage set-up, along with the core adventure water sports infrastructure. With the increasing cost, it is likely that by the completion of the project, the actual cost might increase to Rs. 1500 crore.
