A day after ordering civic authorities in Delhi-NCR to immediately capture, sterilise, and permanently relocate all stray dogs to shelters, the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued circular addressing the rising number of stray dogs within its premises.
The circular noted a noticeable increase in stray dog activity inside the Supreme Court Complex, including corridors and even lifts. In response, the court has ordered that its directive be implemented without delay.
The circular emphasized proper food disposal as a preventive measure:
“All leftover food must be discarded only in covered dustbins. Disposing of food in open areas or uncovered containers is strictly prohibited. This step is vital to discourage animals from scavenging, reduce the risk of bites, and uphold hygiene standards. Cooperation in this matter is essential for everyone’s safety.”
To tackle the issue, Supreme Court officials recently met with representatives from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
However, the court’s broader order on stray dogs has drawn backlash, particularly from animal rights groups. Earlier on Tuesday, several activists gathered near India Gate to protest the directive. Delhi Police, citing security concerns, prevented the demonstration and later filed an FIR against the protesters.
