Gujarat High Court yesterday slammed ex-IPS Sanjiv Bhatt while hearing his appeal against the Jamnagar Sessions Court sentence in a custodial death case in the district. The sessions court convicted Bhatt in the case and sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2019.
During the hearing, the high court said that Bhatt and the other accused in the case were delaying the court proceedings, by first changing lawyers repeatedly and then presenting baseless arguments. The court said that the case was going on since 2019 and the behaviour of the two accused is dragging the case.
Furthermore, the court also said that it did not work according to the convenience of the accused, but operated as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court. Although Bhatt and the other accused have been given many chances, they continue to misuse the court’s time.
Finally, the court said that it had taken into account the repeatedly changed lawyers and studied the case thoroughly. As such, this would be the last time the court was going to tolerate these things. It asked Bhatt and the lawyer to come fully prepared next time and not waste the court’s time. The High Court scheduled the hearing of the case for July 27.
