The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started a movement to revise the electoral rolls in poll-bound Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Citizens above 18 as of October 1 are eligible to vote and can collect their Aadhar card and registration numbers.
ECI notified the Chief Electoral Officers of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh on Monday. The notice informed the officers about the programme for the revision of rolls. It also ordered them to follow the rules during the revision drive under the Election Laws (Amendment Act), 2021.
It increased qualifying dates from January 1 of each year to January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Further, it allowed the Aadhar card to link with Voter ID.
The State Election Commissions of Gujarat ad Himachal Pradesh shall carry out the pre-revision activities from Monday to August 10. On August 12, the EC shall publish a draft electoral roll. According to the programme, the electoral roll shall be ready by October 10.
The Assembly elections of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will mark the first elections with linked Voter IDs and Aadhar cards. However, the government has not made this mandatory.
Further, the ECE letter said that the applicant had to furnish an Aadhaar Number in Form-6 and Form-8 if they have an Aadhaar number. However, the EC shall not deny any application for including a name on the electoral roll. Also, the EC shall not delete any entries in the electoral roll for the inability of an individual to furnish or intimate the Aadhaar Number.
