Nearly two years after the death of his son, an IIM Ahmedabad student, a father from Telangana has built a temple in his memory, saying it gives his family the strength to continue their fight for justice. The case, which dates back to September 2024, is still under investigation, with the family alleging that there has been little progress despite repeated appeals.
The father, Hemanth Bhukya, says the temple is not only a tribute to his son, Akshith Bhukya, but also a symbol of hope as the family continues to wait for answers.
Student Found Dead on IIM Ahmedabad Campus
Akshith Bhukya, 26, was a second-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) student at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). On September 26, 2024, he was found hanging in Room No. 28 of Dormitory 21 on the institute’s campus.
At the time of his death, Akshith was coordinating an event at the institute. According to his father, he had been under immense pressure and allegedly faced harassment from institute authorities over a dispute related to the use of the IIM Ahmedabad logo by a third party during an event.
Father Claims Investigation Has Made Little Progress
Hemanth Bhukya, a sociology teacher and a resident of Hanamkonda in Telangana’s Warangal district, said the investigation has failed to move forward even after nearly two years.
He claimed that due to several obstacles during the police investigation, no FIR has been registered in connection with his son’s death. According to him, despite approaching the authorities and even filing a court complaint against a person he believes was responsible, no action has been taken so far.
The father also alleged that two investigating officers have been changed during the course of the investigation, but the case has not witnessed any major breakthrough. He added that statements from several students regarding the circumstances surrounding Akshith’s death have already been recorded by investigators.
Temple Built to Keep Son’s Memory Alive
As the family’s hope for a quick resolution faded, Hemanth decided to honour his son in a unique way by building a small temple in Chandiya Thanda, their native village.
According to him, the temple was constructed around eight months ago. Every day, he visits the memorial, where a photograph of his son has been placed. He says the temple has become a place where the family finds emotional strength and keeps Akshith’s memory alive.
Hemanth said the memorial is especially meaningful for his wife, who has been undergoing treatment after struggling to cope with the loss of their only son. He believes the temple has helped the family continue their fight despite the long wait for justice.
Remembering Akshith’s Academic Journey
Akshith had an impressive academic background. He was among the state toppers in both Class 10 and Class 12, according to his father.
Before joining IIM Ahmedabad in 2023, he completed a BTech in Computer Science from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal. He also worked as a software developer in Hyderabad for more than a year.
His father described him as a confident young man who inspired others during difficult times. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, Akshith reportedly counselled and motivated people to remain positive and live life with hope.
Family Continues to Seek Justice
Nearly two years after Akshith’s death, the Bhukya family says they remain committed to pursuing justice. While the temple stands as a lasting tribute to their son, the family hopes that the ongoing investigation will eventually bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding his death.
For Hemanth Bhukya, the memorial is more than a place of remembrance—it is a daily reminder of his son’s life, achievements, and the family’s determination to continue seeking answers.
