FIR filed against BJP leader after anti-Muslim slogans at Jantar Mantar

| Updated: August 10, 2021 15:03

The Delhi Police on Monday registered an FIR against unknown people after anti-Muslim slogans were raised at Jantar Mantar during a protest against colonial laws.

The slogans were raised during a march at Jantar Mantar Sunday. According to the police, the organisers of the event didn’t have permission to carry out the rally.

Videos of the event were widely shared on social media in which individuals can purportedly be heard making derogatory remarks against Muslims.

The FIR has been filed in the Connaught Place Police Station under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code apart from section 51 of Disaster Management Act for violation of Covid-19 guidelines.

The march was organised by former state BJP spokesperson and Supreme Court Lawyer, Ashwini Upadhyay.

According to the police, permission for the protest was denied due to Covid precautions.

Mr Upadhyay has denied had claimed he had no idea such slogans were raised. “I don’t have any relation with Save India Foundation Trust. I was a guest like Mr RVS Mani, Mr Firoz Bakht Ahmed, Mr Gajendra Chauhan. We reached at around 11:00 and left at 12:00. I never met these miscreants as the sloganeering happened around 5 pm”.

The surfaced videos of the event showed some individuals calling for the killing of Muslims, and raising ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogans.

The slogan “Hindustan mein rehna hoga toh ‘Jai Shree Ram’ kehna hoga (If you want to live in Hindustan, you must say Jai Shree Ram),” could be heard in one of the videos, purportedly of the event.
