A ship anchored at Porbandar Subhashnagar Jetty in Gujarat caught fire on Monday. The fire dousing operation began with three fire brigade vehicles arriving at the scene, officials said.
The ship – Haridarshan, which belongs to Jamnagar-based HRM & Sons, was towed to the middle of the sea as the fire became severe due to its load of rice. It was carrying sugar as well. The weight of the rice and sugar was 1000 tonne. The ship was bound for Bosaso, Somalia.
As the fire escalated due to the combustible cargo, authorities decided to tow the vessel into open waters to prevent further damage. The ship was reportedly en route to Bosaso, Somalia, when the incident occurred. At the time of the incident, all 14 crew members on board the ship were safely evacuated.
According to preliminary reports, the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Parts of the ship suffered extensive damage. The vessel’s owner has reportedly incurred substantial financial losses.
