In a tragic incident during peak office hours, five people were killed and three others injured after falling from two local trains crossing each other near Mumbai on Monday morning.
Railway officers have been quoted saying that the accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. between Diva and Kopar stations on the Central Railway line. One train was heading toward Kasara, while the other was en route to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Preliminary reports have suggested that the commuters were standing on the footboards of the moving trains when they lost balance as the trains crossed paths, causing them to fall onto the tracks. The age of all the victims is believed to be between 30 and 35 years.
The guard of the Kasara-bound train promptly alerted railway authorities, following which emergency teams, including police personnel and ambulances, rushed to the scene. The injured were taken to a hospital in Kalwa, where five were declared dead on arrival.
Efforts are currently underway to identify the deceased.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences to the families of the victims, calling the incident “very unfortunate.”
“It is very unfortunate that a total of eight passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station and some of them lost their lives. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families,” he posted on social media platform X.
