Former Scientist Duped Of Rs 4 Cr In Real Estate Scam

| Updated: May 23, 2024 08:18

Bharat Doshi, who retired from the Institute of Plasma Research, has filed a police complaint

Bharat Doshi, 62, who retired from the Institute of Plasma Research (IPR) in Ahmedabad as a scientific officer, filed a complaint with Adalaj police on Tuesday against four members of a Gota family for cheating him out of Rs 4 crore.

The complaint is for breach of trust, cheating and abetment against the accused Chandrakant Shah, a resident of Ganesh Skyline in Gota, his wife and two children.

Doshi, a resident of Sector 1 in Gandhinagar, in his complaint said that he was told the money would be invested in various real estate schemes. He met the accused in 2021.

Doshi said that Shah would meet him at community events and often urged him to invest in real estate. Shah showed him a residential and commercial building scheme near Zundal Circle and said it was his own. Shah convinced Doshi to invest Rs 1.7 crore in the scheme in 2021.

Second deal

Doshi paid money into various accounts held by Shah, his wife Asha and their children Deep and Krushi. He said Shah again came to him in 2022 with a deal to buy a plot of land on which a residential and commercial building would be developed. He convinced Doshi to invest Rs 2 crore in that scheme as well.

Doshi alleged that Shah also took Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh from him on separate occasions in 2023. As Doshi was having some doubts, he decided to check on the scheme in Zundal. To his dismay, he found that the scheme belonged to someone else.

After this, Doshi demanded that Shah return his money. Shah returned Rs 29 lakh in cash and gave him three cheques for Rs 10 lakh each, all of which bounced in 2023.
