GIFT (Gujarat International Finance-Tec) City, a smart city project in Gujarat, has eased the prohibition law to allow wine and dine facilities for its workers and visitors. The move is aimed at competing with global financial centres like Dubai, Singapore, and London, and attracting young talent who want an evening life.
The state government issued a notification on December 22, 2023, announcing the relaxation of the Prohibition Act in GIFT City. A panel under the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) has been authorised to facilitate licences for the wine and dine service, which will start soon.
Tapan Ray, Managing Director and CEO of GIFT City, said that the relaxation has been done in a very limited manner and only for those who work or visit GIFT City for work purposes. He said that the prohibition law was a hindrance for the financial services sector, which is the main focus of GIFT City. He also said that the relaxation was part of the events planned for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) next week.
