Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was transferred to Tihar Jail on Monday, following a ruling by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court that ordered his judicial custody until April 15. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case linked to an excise policy.
Upon arrival at Tihar Jail, Kejriwal was lodged in Jail Number 2 after undergoing a medical examination. He will be kept in a separate cell, according to a jail official. Notably, Kejriwal is the fourth Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader to be incarcerated in Tihar Jail. Reports indicate that former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, is housed in Jail No. 1, former Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain in Jail no 7 and an AAP Rajya Sabha MP in Jail no 5.
Kejriwal’s daily routine in Tihar Jail will mirror that of other inmates, beginning at 6:30 am. Breakfast will consist of tea and a few slices of bread. Kejriwal is expected to consult with his lawyers or attend court if a hearing is scheduled.
Lunch, served between 10:30 am to 11:00 am, will include rice, five rotis, sabzi and pulses. Tea will be served at 3:30 pm with two biscuits, and dinner will be served around 5:30 pm. All inmates will be locked up by 7 pm.
Kejriwal will be permitted to watch television, with access to 18 to 20 channels, including news, entertainment, and sports channels. Regular medical checks will be conducted due to his diabetic condition, with medical staff on standby for emergencies. He will be allowed to meet family members twice a week within the jail premises.
Upon special request, Kejriwal will be provided with three books – the Ramayan, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and “How Prime Ministers Decide” by journalist Neerja Chowdhury.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal was produced in the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja after his ED custody ended. The federal agency alleged that the Delhi CM was “totally uncooperative” and sought 15-day judicial custody.
