| Updated: March 14, 2022 10:15

Gujarat state government plans to set up sports colleges in every district to boost the growth of athletes who pass out from sports schools. Gujarat government also plans to set up district sports centres in all 33 districts over the next two years.

The projects are part of Gujarat’s new comprehensive Sports Policy revealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 11th Khel Mahakumbh.

The government also plans to set up four new high-performance centres, out of which one will be dedicated to para-athletes. These centres will provide training facilities, infrastructure and equipment of international standard to help athletes.

Eight centres of excellence will also be built in the state with multi-disciplinary facilities for athletes. In addition, the existing sports infrastructure will also be upgraded as per national/international standards.

The policy also plans to focus on the development of coaches with the launch of a first of its kind coach accreditation and coach career pathway programme.

The policy also has programmes to promote sports among tribal people. It also foresees ‘Atmanir Bharat’ in manufacturing sports gear and equipment. The government will set up a unique cluster dedicated to manufacturing sports goods, equipment, and apparel.

Private sector participation in sports will be encouraged as Gujarat plans to be the country’s leading state to give athletes support, rewards, and incentives.
