The state government recently made an announcement that Gita is to be compulsorily taught in schools. For standards 6-8, Gita would be in the form of stories. It would also be included in prayers, and various activities such as shlok recitation, debates, dramas, drawings etc. For classes 9-12,it is said to be introduced in the form of reading material in textbooks.
But, the high court was against this decision, and a PIL challenging the state government’s decision to introduce Gita, was brought forward.
The objection was first brought forward by Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, Gujarat on the grounds that the law was breaching constitutional principles of equality, fraternity and secularism. Hence, introducing a religious book (Gita) of one community could hurt the sentiments of other communities.
