Gujarat ATS Nabs Mufti Salman Azhari for Hate Speech

| Updated: February 5, 2024 18:19

Mufti Salman Azhari, a religious leader who delivered a provocative speech at a function in Junagadh, was arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) from Mumbai on Sunday night. According to sources, the ATS team faced resistance from a crowd of supporters before they could capture the Mufti in Ghatkopar. However, the Gujarat police said the situation was under control and the Mufti would be soon transferred to Junagadh police.

The Junagadh police had given permission for a programme to hold a religious discourse and spread awareness about de-addiction. “But during the event, Mufti Salman and others made incendiary statements. We filed a case in this regard and arrested two people. We were searching for Mufti Salman. On Sunday night, Gujarat ATS arrested him and he will be handed over to us shortly,” said a senior officer of Junagadh police.

Junagadh SP Harshad Mehta said a case was registered at B Division Police station as the speech was made at an open venue. The speech became viral on social media and sparked communal tension in Junagadh. The police booked the accused under section 153 (B) for creating animosity between different groups. On January 31, the local organisers of the programme, Yusuf Malik and Habib, were also arrested by Junagadh police.
