Gujarat Contractors Association Threatens To Stall Work Amidst Rising Price

| Updated: January 4, 2022 21:20

Just weeks ahead of Vibrant Gujarat Summit, Gujarat Contractors Association has threatened to stall the work on various government projects because of the pandemic-induced escalation in prices of raw materials.

“We are heading towards insolvency. The contractors will be forced to wrap up simply because of the highly-priced raw materials. We request the government to look into out plea,” stated Arvind Patel, president, GCA.

“The prices of cement, steel, bitumen, gravel, sand, bricks, overheads such as transportation and labour charges have increased between 30 to 40 percent during the pandemic. With most ongoing work stalled during the pandemic, payments for the contractors too have been shelved. We are being pushed into shutting down the PMAY projects worth Rs. 15,000 crores. Not only our business but government-set target dates will also be impacted,” he warned.

According to the GCA vice president, Kishore Viramgama thr price escalation is back-breaking. “The government can forfeit our deposits and blacklist us. After a certain point, we cannot carry on,” in his words. In fact, civil contractors across the country have requested the government to look into their demand of increasing the price of contracts.

According to GCA data, Rs 25,000 crore worth projects of various departments of the state government are underway. This includes the 1.5 lakh units being built under Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojana.
