Kartik Patel, the owner of Khyati Hospital and a key accused in the angioplasty death case, is reportedly hiding in Dubai, according to senior police officers.
“Kartik Patel travelled to Australia on November 3 and subsequently fled to Dubai,” said a senior officer from the crime branch. The police are now engaging a chartered accountant to scrutinise the hospital’s accounts, which allegedly earned over ₹22 crore through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) by conducting angioplasties.
The investigation was triggered by the deaths of two patients, Mahesh Barot, 52 and Nagar Senma, 72, from Borisana village in Mehsana district on November 11, following angioplasty procedures at Khyati Hospital. Further inquiries uncovered three additional deaths over the past 18 months, all involving patients from Kadi who were diagnosed with artery blockages during health camps organised in their villages.
On November 25, the crime branch arrested four individuals near Kapadvanj in Kheda district. Those detained include Chirag Rajput, the hospital’s marketing and branding director and Rahul Jain, the hospital’s CEO, along with associates Milind Patel, Pankil Patel and Pratik Bhatt.
Milind Patel reportedly coordinated health camps and worked with general practitioners in Ahmedabad and neighbouring districts to refer patients to Khyati Hospital. Pankil Patel and Pratik Bhatt were responsible for organising camps and persuading individuals to undergo medical procedures.
The racket came to light following the deaths of Barot and Senma. An FIR alleged that neither patient required angioplasty. On November 13, three FIRs were registered at the Vastrapur police station against Kartik Patel, along with Dr Prashant Vazirani, Dr Sanjay Patolia, Rajshree Kothari and Chirag Rajput. The charges include criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
Meanwhile, the crime branch conducted a search of Chirag Rajput’s residence in Makarba and questioned PM-JAY officials regarding their potential role in approving fraudulent applications under the scheme.
