The much-awaited Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, expected to reduce travel time between the two cities, is far from ready.
Reports claim that the Rs 1 lakh crore project would take another two years owing to delay in construction of around half a dozen stretches, especially three sections with a total length of 87 km in Gujarat.
It has emerged that progress is stalled in one of these sections with a 35 km distance. In the other two, it’s 7% and 35%, numbers that indicate that the project has hit a plateau.
The expressway may not be fully operational until 2027.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, it’s reported, urged officials to expedite the construction process.
The 1,386-kilometer expressway travels through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. The sections in Rajasthan should be ready by March or April 2026, while the sections in Haryana have already been completed.
However, the project’s overall timeframe is seriously hampered by the delays in Gujarat. With the exception of a 21-kilometre connection to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, most of Maharashtra’s expressway packages are anticipated to be finished by the end of this year.
