Authorities on Sunday said that an Indian passenger headed for Dubai was detained at the Surat airport by personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for allegedly hiding raw diamonds worth over Rs 2 crore.
Sanjaybhai Moradiya was detained on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. as he was being interrogated by airport security before boarding an international aircraft operated by Indigo Airlines, according to a senior CISF officer.
A total of 1,092 gm of raw or unpolished diamonds were found hidden in the passenger’s ankle socks and undergarments during a partial pat-down search and full-body frisking, he continued.
The passenger has been turned over to the authorities of the Customs Department so that they can do further investigation.
According to the officer, the retrieved diamonds are valued at Rs 2.19 crore.
