Gujarat On Alert: Covid Resurfaces With Fresh Infections

| Updated: May 20, 2025 17:21

After some respite, the COVID-19 virus could be sneaking into our lives. According to reports, fresh Covid cases have been recorded both within India and across Asia.

Gujarat is placed sixth with seven active cases. The present situation reflects a noticeable uptick in Gujarat.

Six new infections emerged last week, and only one patient has recovered during the same period. Since the pandemic began in 2020, the state has logged over 12 lakh confirmed cases, with the death toll reaching 11,101—a grim reminder of the devastation the virus has left in its wake.

Kerala leads the tally with 95 active cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 66, Maharashtra with 56, Karnataka with 13, Puducherry with 10.

The total number of active cases in India has now climbed to 257, reigniting fears of another wave.

The virus, once thought to be receding, seems to be regaining ground. In Asia, renewed concern is mounting as health authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore have flagged a spike in infections.

Reports claim that both regions are witnessing an alarming upward trend. Albert Au, the head of the Communicable Disease Branch at Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection, told local media that the level of virus activity is currently “quite high”.

Singapore, too, has reported a sharp surge. Data from a Singapore-based news channel reveals that the estimated number of COVID-19 cases rose to 14,200 during the week of April 27 to May 3, up from 11,100 cases in the preceding week. More concerningly, the number of serious cases and fatalities climbed to 31, marking the highest level recorded in about a year, as per official figures.

It appears the stubborn pathogen is not done yet. Nearly three years after the initial global onslaught, Covid is once again testing the vigilance of public health systems—demanding renewed attention, even in regions that had previously managed to tame its spread.
