Gujarat Police Bust Interstate ‘Car Window’ Theft Gang, Two Arrested

| Updated: May 16, 2026 20:37

In a major breakthrough, Gujarat Police have arrested two alleged members of an interstate gang accused of stealing cash and valuables from parked cars across multiple states.

The accused — Satish Indrekar and Nakul Tamaiche, both residents of Ahmedabad — are believed to be part of the notorious “Chhara” gang, known for targeting parked vehicles at crowded cities and religious places.

Police said the duo travelled to different states by flight, identified unattended four-wheelers, smashed car windows and fled with cash and valuables within minutes.

During the operation, police recovered:

  • Cash worth ₹1.5 lakh
  • A motorcycle allegedly used in the crimes
  • Total recovered property valued at ₹2.2 lakh

According to investigators, the gang may be linked to more than 25 similar theft cases across India.

Theft Spree Across Banaskantha

The case surfaced after a series of vehicle break-ins were reported between May 5 and 6 in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district.

In one incident in Danta, thieves allegedly broke a car window and escaped with ₹1.8 lakh in cash. Similar thefts were also reported from Palanpur and Vadgam areas.

CCTV, Technical Surveillance Lead to Arrests

Police said CCTV footage collected by the Netram branch in Palanpur, combined with technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, helped identify the suspects.

A joint operation by Banaskantha Crime Branch and Ahmedabad police led to the arrest of the duo from Ahmedabad.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to thefts in Danta and Vadgam and revealed that they had also flown to Kolkata to carry out similar crimes targeting parked vehicles.

Police are now investigating the gang’s possible links to other interstate theft cases.
