Contrary to allegations that the Election Commission delayed the announcement of Gujarat elections this year, the fact is that this time around elections will be held at least a week earlier than on previous occasions. Elections for 89 assembly seats will be held on December 1 and for the remaining 93 seats on December 5. The results are expected on December 8.
The elections to be conducted for the 15th Gujarat legislative assembly in December 2022, will be the earliest in two decades. Between 2002 and 2017, the first phase of all the assembly elections in Gujarat took place between December 9 and December 13.
Since the first assembly elections in Gujarat state, 2012 saw the highest voting at 72.02 percent, followed by 2017 at 59.01 percent. The lowest voting observed were in 1980 and 1985 where only 48.37 percent and 48.82 percent of voters cast their votes.
The polling stations have increased from 10,960 in 1962 to 51,782 in 2022.
