Gujarat reported a decline in electricity consumption during the festival of lights – Diwali. The power demand reduced to 12,639 MW on the day of Diwali – Thursday which further dropped to 11,164 MW on the day of Gujarati New Year – Friday and the demand on Bhai Duj – Saturday was reported as low as 11.947 MW.

A data compiled by the Western Region Load Dispatch Centre (WRLDC) – a central govt entity shows that an overall electricity demand was more at 16,516 MW on last Monday. Against this, Monday, November 8 witnessed the demand to be 12,641 MW. Also, the demand is expected to remain low on Tuesday – Labh Pacham too.

The probable reason of reduced power consumption, according to the experts, is closed houses and commercial establishments as people moved out for holidays during the festive times. As a result of this, the state witnessed a drop in the electricity demand.
