Even as Gujarat has a waiting of around 1100 in the patients waiting for cadaveric kidney transplants, there has been a two-fold rise in number of transplants from living patients in the last three years.
According to a report in a vernacular daily, the figures have been quoted from the famous Institute of Kidney Diseases And Research Centre (IKDRC) at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.
The newspaper has quoted IKDRC director Dr. Pranjal Modi saying that on one hand there has been an increasing awareness among people about treatment of kidney problems and on the other hand the cadaveric transplants are less in numbers due to less organ donations. This has resulted in family members and relatives donating kidneys to the patients to save them from the pain of dialysis.
In this Centre alone, last three years have seen 746 donations from relatives and as many transplants (199 in 2023, 309 in 2024 and till August 2025 238) as against about 395 cadaveric donations and transplants.
Experts opine that pain in the chest, swelling in the legs, less urine output, difficulty in breathing, getting tired fast may well be symptoms of kidney failure.
