A Gujarati actor who indulged in frauds and cheating people in order to get roles in films and man giving opportunities to youngsters in the entertainment industry has been arrested by Gujarat police after 12 years. He had been sentenced life imprisonment but had jumped parole 12 years ago.
The accused, identified as Hemant Modi, had been living in Mumbai’s film world after fleeing from Ahmedabad. Police said that despite several attempts over the years, they could not trace him because he kept changing locations and identities within the film industry.
According to police, a complaint was filed at Kadi police station in Mehsana district alleging that Hemant had cheated people by promising them roles in films and TV serials. After the FIR, he escaped and disappeared into Mumbai’s film circles.
Murder Case in Naroda in 2007
Police records reveal that Hemant Modi was also accused in a murder case registered in Ahmedabad’s Naroda area in 2007. At that time, he had allegedly managed to secure bail. Later, when the case proceedings resumed, he disappeared again and remained on the run for years.
The report says that after the death of his wife, Hemant had told relatives he no longer wished to live and even attempted suicide. However, after recovering, he again vanished and continued evading police action.
How Was He Finally Caught?
Police received fresh intelligence about Hemant Modi’s whereabouts and launched a surveillance operation in Ahmedabad. A special team tracked his movements and eventually detained him from near Kadi.
Investigators said that even after being detained, Hemant initially tried to mislead officers by concealing his real identity. However, technical surveillance and verification confirmed that he was the same accused who had been absconding for over a decade.
Police Could Not Trace Him Earlier
The report notes that Hemant continuously shifted between small acting assignments, backstage work and different locations in Mumbai’s film ecosystem, making it difficult for police to identify and arrest him. Officials admitted that for years he successfully avoided detection by frequently changing addresses and contacts.
