Gujaratis Lead 855% Increase in Indian Asylum Applications to US

| Updated: January 18, 2025 12:14

Indian citizens applying for asylum in the United States have risen to a staggering 855% since 2021, with Gujaratis topping the list. The number of asylum claims filed by Indians surged over the 2023 fiscal year to 41,330 compared with 4,330 in the 2021 fiscal year (FY21), according to data from the US Department of Homeland Security. Nearly half of these applicants are from Gujarat, it is reported.

Why is Gujarat a major contributor to the increase in asylum seekers?

Numerous variables have contributed to this dramatic increase from Gujaratis, notably socio-political and economic, including aspirations for more personal and professional freedoms in the US and perceived prospects of a better life.

Gujaratis fascination for the US is well-documented. The growing number of asylum seekers from Gujarat and those seeking refuge or illegal entry also underscores broader challenges in the US immigration system.

Even the approval percentage for Indian asylum claimants has risen. In FY21, 1,330 Indian applicants received refuge, including 630 through defensive proceedings and 700 through affirmative petitions.

Further, in FY22, there were 2,180 affirmative and 2,080 defensive grants, more than tripling the number of successful cases to 4,260.

Indians were the seventh-largest group for affirmative asylum petitions in 2023 and the fifth-largest group seeking defensive asylum. According to data highlighted in the 2023 Asylees Annual Flow Report published in October, as many as 5,340 Indians were given asylum in 2023. This comprises 2,630 defensive cases and 2,710 affirmative cases.

Indians submitted 4,330 applications in FY21, including 2,090 defensive and 2,090 affirmative petitions to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The Times of India reported that by FY22, this number had more than tripled to 14,570, with 9,200 defensive and 5,370 affirmative requests.

The number of Indian asylum seekers had almost tripled to 41,330 by FY23. This ongoing increase points to a larger trend of people looking for safety or legal status in the US for political, economic, and personal reasons, a media outlet has reported.

The general increase in asylum requests also points to growing worries about opportunities and safety in India.
