Gujarat has recorded a 28% increase in energy supply over the past four years, rising from 1,13,939 million units in FY2020 to 1,45,740 million units in FY2024. In the first nine months of FY2025, the state’s energy supply has already reached 1,13,697 million units.

In response to a query raised by Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani, MoS (Power) Shripad Naik stated that India has transitioned from a power-deficit nation to a power-sufficient one over the last decade.

“The country’s installed generation capacity currently stands at 4,62,065 MW, with 2,30,050 MW added since April 2014. The government aims to increase the total installed generation capacity from all sources to 900 GW by 2031-32,” Naik said.

The projected capacity includes conventional sources such as coal and lignite, as well as renewable sources including solar, wind, hydro, pumped storage projects (PSP), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The Ministry of Power, in consultation with states, has planned to add at least 80,000 MW of thermal capacity by 2031-32. Of this, 28,020 MW is currently under construction, and contracts for an additional 19,200 MW have been awarded in FY2024-25. A further 36,320 MW of coal and lignite-based capacity has been identified at various stages of planning.

The minister also reported that 13,997.5 MW of hydroelectric projects and 8,000 MW of PSP are under construction. Additionally, 24,225.5 MW of hydroelectric projects and 50,760 MW of PSP are in various stages of planning and are scheduled for completion by 2031-32. In the nuclear sector, 7,300 MW of capacity is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2029-30, while 7,000 MW is in different stages of planning and approval.

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a bidding trajectory for procuring 50 GW of renewable energy annually through Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies from FY2023-24 to FY2027-28. The government has also permitted 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) under the automatic route.

The minister stated that the National Electricity Plan includes the addition of approximately 1,91,474 km of transmission lines and 1,274 GVA of transformation capacity at 220 kV and above voltage levels from 2022-23 to 2031-32.
