Gujarat’s ITIs Witness a Rise of Women Seeking Technical Education

| Updated: March 1, 2024 19:06

Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Gujarat have witnessed a significant rise in enrollments in 2023, especially among women. According to the Directorate of Employment and Training (DET), the number of women enrolling in ITIs increased by 24%, from 4,048 in 2022 to 5,049 in 2023. The women-only ITIs also grew from 19 to 23 in the same period. The overall percentage of women enrollments in the 288 government ITIs went up by 9%.

The Director of DET, Gargi Jain IAS, attributed this trend to the growing interest and recognition of the opportunities offered by technical education. She said that the ITI Ecosystem Summit in Gandhinagar would further enhance the ITI ecosystem and empower the youth for the 21st-century economy. She also stressed the importance of creating inclusive and enabling environments within the educational institutions.

The enrollments in ITIs have bounced back after the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the door-to-door campaigns initiated by the DET. Senthil Kumar MK, the director of Youth Program (Operations) at Quest Alliance, said that the women learners preferred to join exclusive women ITIs. He also said that the women learners were motivated by the job and self-employment prospects after completing the ITI courses. He added that the alumni influence was another key factor for the improved participation of women in ITIs.

Quest Alliance is a non-profit organization that has been working with 100 ITIs in Gujarat since January 2019. The organization aims to enhance the employability skills of the ITI students through direct facilitation and mentoring of facilitators. The organization has partnered with DET Gujarat to develop a comprehensive approach for improving the quality and relevance of ITI education.
