As the summer heat intensifies, Gujarat is witnessing a surge in power demand, nearing a staggering 24,000 MWs. The State Load Despatch Centre reports that on April 20, 2024, the peak power demand in Gujarat reached 23,916MW. This coincided with a record high in electricity consumption for the summer, with 491 million units consumed.
With the harshest months of summer yet to come, experts predict that this year’s power demand will exceed the previous record of 24,540 MW, set in September 2023.
In contrast, the state has experienced a boost in solar power generation. This increase was particularly noticeable in April, when ground-mounted solar panels alone generated 5,605MW, equivalent to 43.62 million units on April 20. This figure does not include power generated from rooftop installations, underscoring the substantial growth of solar energy capacity in the state.
For context, in April 2019, the state’s peak power demand was considerably lower, standing at 17,865 MW.
