Gujarat’s Race Against Time For Olympic Village Project

| Updated: February 6, 2024 17:39

Before the election code of conduct comes into force in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, the Gujarat government is trying to finish the process of finalising the firm for Rs 6,000-crore Olympic Village in Ahmedabad.

Two global firms, Building Design Partnership Ltd (BDP) from the UK and Populous, specialising in sports facilities, have expressed interest in preparing the project report for the Olympic Village.

“Any of these companies can be awarded the project, following a stringent evaluation of their plans and financial proposals,” said sources close to the development.

The chosen company will be tasked with preparing a detailed report within four to six months post-bid win. This report may revise the initial Rs 6,000 crore project cost estimate.

The proposed Olympic Village at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave includes various state-of-the-art facilities like the Ring of Unity (RoU), multipurpose indoor arena, tennis centre, aquatic centre, and football stadium.

The project’s commencement is scheduled for 2027-28, with completion anticipated by 2030.

In addition to the Olympic Village, the Gujarat government is set to announce and inaugurate various infrastructure projects under the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority’s (AUDA) jurisdiction.

A senior official from the urban development department confirmed that AUDA would inaugurate the VIP Road four-lane underpass before the Code of Conduct (CoC) is enforced for the elections.

This event, along with others, will be presided over by political leaders. “The VIP Road underpass will greatly benefit residents of Shela, Ghuma, Bopal, South Bopal, and nearby areas. Additionally, AUDA will commence the six-lane underpass project at Ognaj Circle on SP Ring Road,” the official stated.

The estimated costs for the VIP Road and Ognaj Circle underpasses are around Rs 30 crore and Rs 65 crore, respectively, as per AUDA sources.
