The way people lived in the Harappan civilisation may have influenced not only where they built their homes and settlements, but also what they ate and how they prepared their food. A new study examining microscopic wear patterns on ancient human teeth has found clear differences in the types of food consumed by people living at two important Harappan-era sites.

Researchers studied 22 human teeth recovered from archaeological sites at Juna Khatiya in Gujarat’s Kutch district and Rakhigarhi in Haryana. By examining tiny patterns of wear on the teeth, the researchers were able to reconstruct clues about the food people ate and how heavily that food was processed.

The findings suggest that people living at Juna Khatiya between 3200 BCE and 2600 BCE generally ate harder and less processed foods. In comparison, people living at Rakhigarhi during the Mature Harappan period, between 2500 BCE and 1900 BCE, appear to have consumed softer and more heavily processed food.

The research provides a glimpse into how food habits may have changed as Harappan settlements became more urbanised and food production and distribution became more organised.

Ancient teeth reveal everyday food habits

Archaeologists often study pottery, tools, buildings and other objects to understand ancient civilisations. But human teeth can provide another important source of information.

The researchers examined microscopic wear patterns on the teeth. These tiny marks are influenced by the texture and consistency of the food people chew.

In simple terms, eating harder, rougher or less processed foods can leave different microscopic patterns on teeth compared with eating softer foods that have undergone more processing.

By studying these patterns, researchers can therefore get an idea of the types of food that were part of people’s everyday diets thousands of years ago.

Juna Khatiya people ate harder, less processed food

The teeth recovered from Juna Khatiya in Kutch showed greater complexity and variation in their microscopic wear patterns.

Researchers interpret this as evidence that people at the site were eating tougher and less processed foods.

Juna Khatiya dates to the period between 3200 BCE and 2600 BCE, making it an important site for understanding food practices before and during the development of the Mature Harappan phase.

The evidence suggests that food at this settlement may have undergone less processing before it was eaten. People could have consumed foods that required more chewing and retained more of their original texture.

Rakhigarhi shows a different dietary pattern

The picture was different at Rakhigarhi, one of the major Harappan archaeological sites in present-day Haryana.

The teeth from Rakhigarhi showed a pattern associated with softer and more heavily processed foods.

The site belongs to the Mature Harappan period, roughly 2500 BCE to 1900 BCE. This was a period when Harappan settlements had developed into larger and more organised population centres.

The difference between the two groups suggests that changes in settlement patterns and ways of life may also have influenced how food was prepared and consumed.

What did Harappans eat?

The dental evidence does not point to a completely different set of foods at the two locations. In fact, the researchers found that the two populations appear to have had access to broadly similar food resources.

Archaeological evidence shows that Harappan communities cultivated a variety of grains, including:

Millets
Wheat
Barley
Rice

Their diets were not limited to grains. They also consumed pulses and other plant foods.

Animal foods were another part of Harappan diets. Evidence suggests that people consumed domesticated animals, game and fish.

This means that the difference identified through dental analysis may not simply have been about which foods were available. It may also have been about how those foods were prepared and processed before consumption.

Why food processing matters

Food processing can change the texture and hardness of what people eat.

For example, grinding grains, cooking food thoroughly or processing ingredients into softer forms can make them easier to chew. Less processed foods, on the other hand, may remain harder and require more chewing.

The study suggests that such differences in food preparation can be detected even thousands of years later through microscopic patterns preserved on human teeth.

This makes dental research useful not only for understanding nutrition, but also for studying everyday life in ancient societies.

Urbanisation may have changed what people ate

One of the most important questions raised by the findings is why food habits differed between the two populations.

Researchers suggest that increasing urbanisation, occupational specialisation and the growth of large population centres may have encouraged more standardised systems of food production, processing and distribution.

As settlements became larger and social and economic activities became more specialised, food may have increasingly moved through organised systems rather than being prepared entirely at the household level.

Such changes could have influenced the texture and preparation of food before it reached people’s plates.

Food tells the story of a changing civilisation

The study highlights an important point about the Harappan civilisation: changes in society can sometimes be seen in something as ordinary as a person’s diet.

Harappan communities had access to many of the same broad food resources, but people in different settlements and periods may have prepared and consumed those foods in different ways.

At Juna Khatiya, the evidence points towards harder and less processed foods, while Rakhigarhi shows signs of softer and more heavily processed diets.

The difference may reflect broader changes taking place across Harappan society as communities became larger, more urban and more specialised.

A new way to understand Harappan life

The study of 22 ancient teeth therefore offers more than information about what Harappans ate. It provides clues about how food was prepared, how communities were organised and how everyday life changed over time.

Buildings and artefacts can show where people lived and what they made. But microscopic traces on teeth can reveal something much more personal — what people actually put into their mouths and how that food was processed.

The findings add another layer to the understanding of the Harappan civilisation and show how small details preserved in human remains can help researchers reconstruct the lives of people who lived more than 4,000 years ago.
