“He-Man” Dharmendra Passes Away

| Updated: November 24, 2025 14:48

Veteran actor Dharmendra passed away at his Mumbai residence on Monday. He was 89.

An official word from the family is awaited.

He is survived by his wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his six children — actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, along with Ajeeta and Vijeta.

The iconic star had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month due to respiratory complications. Fondly remembered as Bollywood’s “He-Man,” Dharmendra leaves behind a distinguished film career that stretched for more than sixty years. His last film appearance will be in Ikkis, slated for release on December 25.

Considered one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring luminaries, Dharmendra made his debut with the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Known for effortlessly balancing dramatic intensity with light-hearted comedy, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 2012. Across his prolific career, he delivered numerous memorable performances in films such as Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Pratiggya, Chupke Chupke, Naukar Biwi Ka, Phool Aur Patthar, Satyakam, Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Ankhen, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Jeevan Mrityu, Jugnu, Charas, Dharam Veer, Azaad, Ghazab, Loha, Hukumat, and Apne.

As a producer, he backed Ghayal, featuring his son Sunny Deol, which won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Dharmendra also bagged multiple Best Actor honours at the Filmfare Awards for films including Phool Aur Patthar, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and Resham Ki Dori.

Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8 in a Ludhiana village in Punjab, he married Prakash Kaur in 1954 at the age of 19, before embarking on his cinematic journey. He later married actor Hema Malini.

Even in his late eighties, Dharmendra stayed active online, frequently posting videos that encouraged wellness and natural living. His Instagram feed often showcased him riding a tractor, working on his farm, and sharing down-to-earth advice and farming insights. His most recent on-screen role was in the 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.

Condolence messages are pouring in. Bollywood and the entire nation mourns his death.

The last rites will be held in Mumbai on Monday.
