Heatwave Alert: IMD Issues Orange Warning for Gujarat

The Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) has raised an Orange Alert for several districts in Gujarat as heatwave conditions are expected to persist over the next four days. With soaring temperatures, residents are urged to take precautions to safeguard their health.

Weather Advisory for the Next Four Days:

May 21st:

  • Heatwave conditions are very likely to persist in isolated pockets across the following districts:
    • Saurashtra-Kutch: Surendranagar, Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Amreli and Kutch.
    • Gujarat region: Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Anand, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, Mehsana, Surat and Valsad.
  • Impact: High temperatures may lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those exposed to the sun or engaged in heavy work. Vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly and individuals with chronic diseases, are at higher risk.
  • Recommended Actions:
    • Stay cool and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
    • Stay hydrated by drinking water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
    • Consider using oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water and buttermilk.

Warm Night Warning:

  • Warm night conditions are likely in isolated pockets in the following districts:
    • Gujarat region: Vadodara and Ahmedabad.
    • Saurashtra: Bhavnagar.

May 22nd:

  • Heatwave conditions are expected to continue in isolated pockets across the same districts as mentioned on May 21st.
  • The impact remains the same, emphasising the need for caution and preventive measures.

May 23rd:

  • Heatwave conditions persist in the same districts as before.
  • Vulnerable individuals should take extra care to avoid heat-related illnesses.

May 24th:

  • Heatwave conditions continue in the specified districts.
  • High temperatures pose health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.
