| Updated: August 4, 2021 17:10

Hidilyn Diaz, the Phillipines weightlifter created history on Monday by winning her Nation its first Gold Medal in weightlifting at Tokyo Olympics after a 97-year-long wait.

The story for Diaz in 2019 was quite different when the 30-year-old was accused to be involved in a plot to overthrow Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte in 2019. Fast forward to today, when she is a history maker. Her journey from being an accused conspirator against the Government to becoming a National hero is inspirational. To this, she stated that the accusations were totally baseless and there was nothing that could deter her ambitions to win her Nation an Olympic medal.

Diaz won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics, 2016 while in her fourth Olympics, she managed to lift a combined weight of 224 kg and made an Olympic record. Talking about her Olympian journey, she said “I am 30 years old and I thought it would be like going down, my performance, but I was shocked I was able to do it,”.

The officials of the country, including Harry Roque(the presidential spokesperson of President Rodrigo Duterte), have showered Diaz with praise as it ended the near-century-long wait for Olympic Gold for a nation that first competed in the Games in 1924. He congratulated Diaz saying that she has brought pride and glory to the Nation.
