| Updated: January 8, 2024 12:59

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has inaugurated a new third assembly line at its fourth two-wheeler plant in Vithalapur, Gujarat, marking a significant step towards bolstering the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This expansion adds a capacity of 6.5 lakh units to the plant.

Mr. Tsutsumu Otani, President, Managing Director & CEO, HMSI, expressed his delight on this occasion. “Today marks a significant milestone as we have inaugurated a new 3rd Assembly Line at our Vithalapur facility in Gujarat. To serve customers more efficiently with speed, undertaking this capacity expansion plan will increase HMSI’s total annual production volumes significantly. HMSI’s Gujarat plant produces scooter models for domestic as well as export markets which will help us to continue leading the trend of scooterization not just in India but across the globe.”

The Vithalapur facility is Honda’s largest scooter-only plant in the world, reflecting the company’s commitment to local manufacturing and alignment with the government’s ‘Make in India’ vision.

The plant manufactures Honda’s best-selling two-wheeler, Activa, and other scooter models like Dio, Activa 125, and Dio 125. It also houses a dedicated engine line for manufacturing global engines for two-wheelers in the 250cc & above category, serving global demand in countries like Thailand, US, Europe, Japan, etc.

The expansion of the Vithalapur plant is expected to create additional employment opportunities in the state, adding to the massive employment already generated by Honda’s two-wheeler plant and its supply chain in Gujarat.

HMSI also plans to increase the female workforce in the manufacturing area and has undertaken various initiatives for the well-being of its female workforce, including infrastructure development like restrooms, creche, and recruitment of female security guards, medical staff, and supervisors.

In line with its philosophy of being a company that society wants to exist, HMSI has accelerated development in the Ahmedabad District, Gujarat, with its fourth plant in Vithalapur. The company has undertaken various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives since the plant’s inauguration. HMSI will continue to extend support towards healthcare, education, road safety, gender equality, and other initiatives in the state.

The company is also actively working towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 at the Gujarat plant, which currently uses 75% electrical power from renewable energy sources, utilizes rainwater harvesting, and is a zero liquid discharge and zero waste to landfill manufacturing facility.
