How To Weather Life’s Storms With Resilience

| Updated: April 18, 2024 13:31

Follow these eight habits that will keep you strong in challenging situations

If there is one quality that people need not just to succeed in life, but to survive, it is resilience. No one’s life is a dream in spite of what social media may portray. The quality that enables us to cope with life’s ups and downs with stoicism is resilience.

Described below are some habits that resilient people practise. These habits are the source of their strength.

Accept change and uncertainty

Change is the only constant. And, the sooner you accept this the better. To deal with change and uncertainty is not easy. But it’s pointless to resist change. Instead, one has to move with the flow and adapt accordingly.

Acknowledge and accept any feelings of discomfort that change and uncertainty may bring. By adapting to change we can remain strong, adaptable and resilient.

Build a support network

While facing challenging times, having a support network can make a huge difference. Reach out to friends and family members and share your problems. Seek professional help if required.

It’s also important to be around people who make you feel positive and inspire you.

Adopt mindfulness

Mindfulness teaches you to accept life as it unfolds. It helps you live in the present moment and is a powerful tool for resilience. Acknowledge the importance of the past and future, but try to focus on the present.

Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk and mindfulness expert, has said that we should embrace our suffering tenderly and not run away from it. That way, we are on the path of healing. If we follow this advice we will experience feelings of discomfort or pain without letting them overwhelm us.

Be ambitious but shed ego

Balancing ambition and humility is crucial. All of us want to achieve something and make a difference in the world. But by remembering that we are a part of the larger whole we can keep our ego in check.

Be kind to yourself

Self-compassion involves treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding as we would a good friend. It’s about avoiding being self-critical to the point of harshness.

The Dalai Lama once said that if you have no compassion for yourself then you are not capable of developing compassion for others. Be kind to yourself. Making mistakes is part of being human.

Feel your emotions fully

Emotions are not a sign of weakness. One of the habits that keep people strong when life is difficult is to feel and express their emotions. Suppressing or avoiding facing your emotions can be harmful.  On the other hand, acknowledging your emotions is empowering.

Understand your core values

Understanding what truly matters to us is very important. Our core values help and guide us when the going gets tough. Knowing who you are and what you believe in is not just about self-awareness, it is about self-empowerment.

Follow a healthy lifestyle

Physical health and mental resilience go hand-in-hand. Regular exercise, a balanced diet and adequate sleep are all essential for overall well-being. They not only keep us physically healthy but enhance mood and mental clarity.
