| Updated: January 28, 2023 1:07 pm

Availability of residential quarters at Gujarat University (GU) on rent at cheap rates and lack of norms about their use and eviction is creating a lot of chaos. There are many instances of PhD students who have not vacated their houses even three years after finishing the course. Due to illegal occupation of 1BHK houses, the wait for those eligible to get houses is getting longer.

Officials at the GU said of the 100 quarters for various ranks of officers and teachers, more than 10 have been illegally occupied for over four years. Executive council member Shaktisinh Chanchu has formally filed a complaint with the university authorities stating that the menace of illegal occupancy in these residential facilities need to be dealt with sternly.

Thanks to illegal occupants, fresh PhD and Master degree students who qualify to get residential units at affordable rates have no option but to keep waiting.
