Pakistanis Asked To Reduce Their Tea Intake. Here’s Why

| Updated: June 16, 2022 19:49

Biggest chunk of an economy’s wealth goes into imports. After Sri Lanka experienced a terrible Economic Crisis, Pakistan is on the verge of following suit. Recently, it has been seen that Pakistan’s economic condition is deteriorating each day and now the nation has only enough funds to last two months.

According to Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning and Development of Pakistan, reducing the intake of ‘Chai’ will reduce its imports, which will eventually help to curb the Country’s economic crises. The Minister on Tuesday appealed to the citizens of Pakistan to reduce their tea consumption by just a cup or two, so that the nation will not have to borrow money specifically for import of tea. It came as shocking news when Iqbal in a recent interaction with the media said that Pakistan imports tea by taking a loan.

Along with this advice, the Minister also went ahead and urged shopkeepers selling the tea to shut down their shops early so that they could also save up some electricity.

The irony is that along with being the biggest importer of tea, Pakistan has one of the largest numbers of tea consumers. In 2020, Pakistan’s tea imports stood at US $640 million in 2020.
