India-China Bilateral Relations: Jaishankar Meets Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong

| Updated: June 25, 2024 20:26

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a crucial meeting with Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong on Tuesday, emphasizing the bilateral relationship and the shared interest in its stability and progress. This meeting comes amidst ongoing tensions between India and China due to the unresolved border dispute in eastern Ladakh.

In addition to his discussions with the Chinese envoy, Minister Jaishankar also held separate meetings with envoys from New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

“Received Ambassador of China, Xu Feihong, this evening. Discussed our bilateral relationship and our common interest in its stabilization and progress. Wished him a successful tenure,” stated the External Affairs Minister.

Xu Feihong assumed his position in Delhi on May 10, ending an 18-month vacancy—the longest gap in over four decades for the Chinese ambassadorship. On May 31, he formally presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu alongside other newly appointed foreign envoys.

Following the meeting, Ambassador Xu expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the Indian side to steer China-India relations in the “right direction.”

“Honored to call on External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar today. We exchanged views on China-India relations and other issues of common interest,” tweeted the Chinese envoy.
