IndiGo stated on Monday that it had placed a definite order with Airbus for 500 narrow-body planes. This is the largest aircraft order ever placed with Airbus by any airline. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.
Earlier, Tata Group-owned Air India had placed orders for 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing. Currently, IndiGo operates more than 300 aircraft. It has previous orders totalling 480 aircraft, which are yet to be delivered.
“With this additional firm order of 500 aircraft for 2030-2035, IndiGo’s order book has almost 1,000 aircraft yet to be delivered well into the next decade,” the airline said in a release.
The IndiGo order book comprises a mix of A320 NEO, A321 NEO and A321 XLR aircraft.
With this new order, since its inception in 2006, IndiGo has ordered a massive total of 1,330 aircraft with Airbus. The budget carrier said that “The fuel-efficient A320NEO Family aircraft will allow IndiGo to maintain its strong focus on lowering operating costs and delivering fuel efficiency with high standards of reliability.”
This year, IndiGo said, it expects to welcome 100 million customers on board and as such literally giving wings to the nation. IndiGo is amongst the fastest-growing airlines in the world and this order will allow it to continue this growth for many years to come.
