A student from Jammu and Kashmir at L D Engineering College in Ahmedabad has alleged that he and his roommate were targeted in a violent incident inside the campus hostel late on Friday, after an online dispute escalated into a physical assault.
The episode, involving a large group of masked youths, has intensified concerns over safety inside the institution’s residential facilities.
According to the student, Sandeep Rana, trouble began the previous day when a heated exchange took place in a WhatsApp group. He claimed he was threatened during the argument. Rana said that on Thursday morning, a group of unknown individuals came to the hostel specifically searching for him. Since he had stepped out, the men questioned his roommate and then left the premises.
Rana alleged that the situation turned far more serious the following evening. Between 30 and 40 people, their faces partially concealed with handkerchiefs, reportedly forced their way inside the hostel. The group entered the room and assaulted Rana’s roommate, apparently believing he was Rana because he was asleep with a cloth covering his face.
“My roommate was attacked only because they mistook him for me,” Rana said, adding that both he and his roommate hail from Jammu and Kashmir. The roommate sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical care.
Rana further claimed that a student activist linked to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), identified only as Dev, had earlier confronted him inside the room and issued death threats. Dev, he said, is a second-semester student at the college.
Footage allegedly recorded during the altercation inside the hostel began circulating on social media shortly after the incident, showing multiple individuals beating a student.
Personnel from Gujarat University Police Station arrived soon after the attack was reported.
Investigating officer S. R. Bawa told media that officers are documenting the complaint and statements. “We are working to identify those involved and to determine what led to the assault,” he said.
