Jio on Wednesday announced a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer Starlink internet services in India, a day after Airtel revealed a similar agreement. The collaboration will see Jio distributing Starlink solutions through its retail outlets and online platforms. However, the agreement is contingent on SpaceX securing the necessary authorisations to sell Starlink services in India.
In an official statement, Jio said, “Through this agreement, the parties will leverage Jio’s position as the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic and Starlink’s position as the world’s leading low Earth orbit satellite constellation operator to deliver reliable broadband services across the country, including the most rural and remote regions of India. Jio will not only offer Starlink equipment in its retail outlets but will establish a mechanism to support customer service installation and activation.”
Jio highlighted that Starlink complements its existing JioAirFiber and JioFiber services by extending high-speed internet to the most challenging locations quickly and affordably. The two companies are also exploring other areas of cooperation to utilise their respective infrastructure and enhance India’s digital ecosystem.
Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, said, “Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority.”
On Tuesday, Airtel announced its agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlink services in India. This was the first such agreement in the country, also subject to SpaceX obtaining the necessary authorisations.
Airtel’s statement indicated plans to explore offering Starlink equipment in its retail stores, providing Starlink services to business customers, and connecting communities, schools, and health centres, particularly in rural areas.
