Mallikarjun Kharge On Congress Presidential Polls: I’m Not A Remote Control Leader

| Updated: October 7, 2022 19:25

Senior Congress leader and candidate for the party’s presidential polls Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday asserted that if becomes the head of the grand old party, the remote control would be with him.

Kharge said, “A lot of people say I am a remote control and work from behind. They say I will do what Sonia Gandhi will say. There is no such thing as a remote control in Congress, people take decisions together. It is your thinking. A few people are creating this idea.” Kharge, who was in Ahmedabad to meet Gujarat Congress delegates for the party polls scheduled for October 17, also hailed Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

“How many times has the prime minister held an election? All the presidents were selected through consensus, and you are teaching me? Where is the remote control in the BJP? When I become president, the remote control will stay with me.” adds Kharge.

About 9,300 delegates of Congress units across the country will be eligible to vote in the election. Kharge said that in the 182-seat strong state legislature, the Gujarat Congress will win 125 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Save the Principles of Gandhi

Launching his campaign for Congress presidential poll from Gujarat, he said, “ This is an internal election. It is an election within a home and so I met the delegates and leaders, who in large numbers have assured to support me. In order to save my party’s ideology, and to take forward the ideals and principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.”

He said if he becomes the party president, he would try to give representation to women, youth, Dalits, and backward classes at every level of the party, and also appeal to state units to fight polls unitedly.”

Talking about his competitor Shashi Tharoor, the veteran Karnataka leader said he was contesting the polls after colleagues and workers asked him to do so.
