On Monday, Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil raised the issue of pollution in the Sabarmati river in the monsoon session of the Parliament. He asked the government about the money spent to clean the Sabarmati river in the last three years.
Minister Puri’s Reply:
On this issue, the government replied that in the last three years central government have spent Rs. 282.17 crore rupees on cleaning the Sabarmati river.
MP Shaktisinh Gohil’s Allegations:
Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil alleged that despite spending so much money, the Sabarmati river is full of pollution and filth. He further added that the Hon’ble Gujarat High Court constituted a Joint Task Force in September 2021 and appointed a Senior Advocate as AMICUS CURIE. In a public interest petition before the High Court, it was found that the sewage is being dumped directly into the Sabarmati river by the industries illegally. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation also accepted these lapses.
MP Gohil accused the government of corruption, claiming that despite the money spent, the Sabarmati River remains polluted and Ahmedabad flooded. The expenses shown on paper and the reality are diametrically opposed.
